Cultural well-being considers the shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviours and identities reflected through language, stories, visual and performing arts, ceremonies and heritage that make up our communities.
It includes topics such as:
- Respect for cultural differences
- Support for newcomers/migrants
- Opportunities to participate in art and cultural activities
- Protection of historical sites, artefacts, traditions
- Access to art and cultural experiences, such as the museum, library or theatre
- Opportunities to celebrate and learn about other culture, such as through events
Examples of what we do in these areas:
- Provision of community grants, such as the Ashburton Trust Events Centre
- Assisting migrants and newcomers through our Welcoming Communities programme
- Maintaining the social history of our district through our cemeteries
